What do you have to say? In each episode of the Language of Business, we'll identify a discussion theme so we can hear from you. Our first topic comes from recent guest Jeff Hulton.
He has some thoughts on how to sell Fine Art Prints and whatever product you have in mind, but he says not always easy: What we all sometimes forget in all those sleepless nights developing our idea, all those overdue credit card bills funding "the next Facebook" and our third espresso is - Not everyone thinks like us, lives like us, acts like us and most importantly shares the same pains or desires we do. Our friends may think our idea is the Bomb but so far the world has been getting along without us and it's going to be OUR job to change that. (Your father told you to get a real job!) Lend your voice to the discussion! An essay from Jeff on this topic is here. Post your reactions to the broadcast or his essay here to the Blog, or on the Language of Business Facebook page. One of Jeff's works is below from http://www.sportingphotoart.com/ Are you starting a new business? Where do you begin? The Language of Business TV show is now on-the-air, on TV, and YouTube.
Each 30-minute broadcast will involve three separate entrepreneur interviews. The first two guests have opposite positions on the same issue. Our third guest, an entrepreneur in the midst of implementing an actual business, offers their perspective. Episode #1 explores the need for a 50-page written Business Plan, in today's fast-paced, text-message laden, and short attention span business environment. The first guest (Tony Solomons of Ideal Marketing Group) doesn't believe such a document is always necessary anymore, while Jeff Hulton (our second guest) of Sporting Photo Art feels differently. Our third guest, Cindy Brown, will provide her thoughts, as she builds Boston's first Ice Bar, Frost. The full, 30-minute broadcast is available here. Many thanks to everyone who has so graciously volunteered their time for this project, inside and outside of Boston College. Please like us on our Facebook site and please like the YouTube videos, too. Most importantly: Please spread the word about the Show and our MBA program to entrepreneurs, companies and executives so we can attract better and stronger ideas to our Consulting and Business Plan courses. Mike Carruthers is the creator and host of Something You Should Know, an award winning, daily radio program aired multiple times per day on over 150 stations across the U.S. Check out his web site as the content is terrific.
Mike has been incredibly helpful to me over the past few months trying to advance our initiative for the MBA Business Planning and Entrepreneurship course in terms of raising our Program's profile and attracting the best 20 ideas. In an effort to return the favor, I asked him how we could be of help, and he indicated he's piloting a new project on entrepreneurship, using long-form interviews of entrepreneurs, regarding how they have developed winning businesses over the years. As a trial segment to gauge listener / viewer interest, he recently interviewed me about the need for a 50-page Business Plan vs. a PowerPoint summary. Please check-out the 30-minute interview here and please contact Mike at [email protected] with your opinions or post them here, or on our Facebook site. Finally, Mike also serves as an executive and media coach (www.MasterMediaCoaching.com) to train authors, experts and entrepreneurs on how to use media exposure to promote their efforts. If you would like to bounce off some ideas re: career planning, he offers these (paid) services, as well. This is my latest segment on Radio Entrepreneurs. The 10-minute audio clip discusses the use of social media in aiding my outreach re: obtaining 20 of the best ideas for my fall MBA Business Plan course.
Congratulations to Christian Amport, whose new brewery will begin production this summer. This is another idea from my BC MBA Business Plan Course which is going live.
You can find the entire press release here, or I'm pasting in a summary below. Good luck, Christian! We are in the process of building out our production facilities and are pleased to announce that Overshores Brewing Co. will be producing its three signature beers—the Simpel, the Tripel Brun, and the Belgique du Noire—for shipment beginning in the second half of this year. Overshores beer has been long awaited by beer connoisseurs around state since the start-up debuted at the 2011 CPTV Craft Beer and Chili Challenge and stood out as the third place finisher in a field of over 70 breweries, including a number of true Belgian imports. In 2012, Overshores returned to the event and was awarded first place, beating over 85 other established breweries. “After several years of refining our product line and securing financing, we are thrilled to have moved to East Haven and begun the build-out of our production facility,” said Christian Amport, founder and president of Overshores Brewing Co. “Our Belgian style beer has received such a warm welcome in Connecticut and it is satisfying to know that in a few short months people will be able to purchase it directly from their local bar or liquor store.” One of our MBA student teams, continuing their work from my fall Business Plan course is headed to the Rice University Business Plan Competition in April. Here's a synopysis of the venture idea they sent in today, which comes courtesy of BC's Sciences Department. This competition is a combination of written work and a series of live presentations. Good luck to the full-time, 2nd year students: Emily Fannon, Robert Sherwood, Andrew Starr, Yinhe (Terry) Zhou and Meghan Zipin.
NanoNET is an innovative lithium-ion battery manufacturer that is poised to dramatically change how the world experiences portable power. As portable electronic devices become more powerful and capable, battery life has not kept pace. Underperformance disappoints consumers, forcing frequent recharging, device capability limitations, and battery replacement. NanoNET addresses this problem with a revolutionary lithium-ion battery that improves performance: reducing charge time to mere minutes, extending battery cycle life twenty fold, improving capacity 100%, all while slashing the weight in half. Congratulations to Cindy Brown on some great press in the Boston Herald today on Boston's first Ice Bar. As you'll recall, this came out of my BC MBA Business Plan course.
Cindy will be one of my first guests in the debut of the Language of Business TV Show, airing in the next 2-3 weeks. Finally, and in case you missed it, here's Cindy's interview about the Ice Bar on Radio Entrepreneurs. Enjoy, Greg Tonight my Boston College International Entrepreneurship graduate course visited one of our alumnae, Jody Mendoza, at her nightclub Mojitos, in Boston. The discussion focused on the launching of Jody's business, how she's navigated her partnership, and how she'll be expanding the Club moving forward. Two pictures from the evening are below.
Jody worked on the Mojitos Business Plan, in part, while she was a full-time MBA student. She also participated in my fall 2012 Business Planning and Entrepreneurship course and will soon be launching a new expansion to the business involving food. Here's a great article on Jody and her husband, Latin America music producer Richy Pena. We wish them the best of luck with their current business, and its expansion! This is a radio link on the Radio Entrepreneurs show describing the Boston College MBA Business Plan Course I teach, and a separate interview with Jennifer Scheer, the founder and CEO of Decorum Style, as an example of an entrepreneur who might participate. Jennifer has done a terrific job weaving together her past work experience, design and marketing talents in starting this new company and we all wish her well!
